COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
Jumpstart
FREE Program for schools – Jumpstart is a program for students in years 9 and 10 that the school feels could benefit from some additional support, perhaps because they are at risk of disengaging from school or not successfully completing their subject requirements. Jumpstart runs at the youth centre for 2 hours each week for 7-8 weeks with a maximum of 12 students and is either run as all girl or all boy groups. The program utilises guest speakers from other local services to cover topics relevant to the needs of the group specified by the school. There is also the option of going on an excursion to St George TAFE and/or other relevant organisations.
Study Start
FREE Program for schools – Study Start has been designed for high school students. It is a one-off 80 minute workshop that is facilitated by 1-2 youth workers for groups of up to 15 students. It can be run in the school or at the youth centre and it covers topics such as learning styles, goal setting, effective study practices, time management, procrastination, motivation and keeping school work organised. Teachers who are interested in this program should call YouthZone on 9580-8008.
Career Start
FREE Program for schools – Career Start has been designed to assist early school leavers with the tools and resources they need for a successful transition from school life to employment or training. It is delivered to either individuals or pairs at the school, using a school computer. Generally the workshop runs for a double-period, however; this is able to be extended to additional meetings if there is a continuing need.
The program is tailored to the individual needs of the participants, but generally this includes the creating of a resume, writing a cover letter, participating in a mock job interview, receiving advice on what to wear to the interview, and the investigation of employment, training and apprenticeship options.
