Youthzone Jumpstart Program - Help for Year 9 & 10 Students
Jumpstart is a program for students in years 9 and 10 that the school feels could benefit from additional support, perhaps because they are at risk of disengaging from school or not successfully completing their subject requirements.
Jumpstart runs at the Hurstville Youth Centre. Students learn basic skills for conflict resolution, goal-setting and team building. Jumpstart often utilises guest speakers or collaborates with other learning centres like St George TAFE.
Twelve students at a school can attend the 8-week Jumpstart Program. The cost of running the program is $3000. Based on current results 10 students will successfully complete their School Certificate and many continue on to HSC.
This year YouthZone is seeking community support to raise $36,000 and conduct 12 Jumpstart programs.
Weekly Barbecue for Disadvantaged Young People
$90 per month enables 'YouthZone' to provide a weekly BBQ meal for young people in the St George area at our Hurstville Drop-in Centre. Providing meals allows us to reach disadvantaged young people and connect them with our Youth Workers for individual case work and a range of other services and support. Our BBQ attracts up to 45 young people every week.
Respite Support - A Break for Carers
Family carers are often hidden from the public awareness, unacknowledged, exhausted and depressed, unable to attend to their own health and well-being needs due to the burden of caring for another.
Providing family carers with a break from their demanding role allows them the time to attend to their mental and physical needs which enables them to continue their caring journey.
Last year, we had 97 families on waiting list for additional assistance or on-going respite. To provide respite for one family, for 3 hours a week, we need $7000 each year.
Testimonial "It gives me peace of mind knowing my mother's needs are in good hands."
Depression Project for Carers
More and more Australians are suffering from depression. Carers, in particular, are six times more likely to suffer depression than the average person, and have the lowest well-being of any large group in our community.
Pole Depot Community Centre offers professional counselling and group support in a caring environment. $18,000 enables us to run our Depression project for one year, helping up to 30 people significantly improve their mental health and well-being.
Testimonial "It's amazing how far I have come. I now have so much more resilience. I can now enjoy laughing again."
